Targetless Scripts Time Travel
Notice that there are no target structures. Anne addresses that (a recent topic here) in an email to me:
“If people want to target phrases they can pick a few to use. Maybe flies, feels. The other thing that this script is really good for, if people are interested, is getting kids to hear how years are said, like 1985 and 1738. I used it with my 4th year students and started by writing the words “past” and “future” on the board (those words are super clunky in German.) We talked for half the period about where/when they would go if they could time travel.
“The script is good because the idea of time travel is really appealing to kids.”
For those who go far enough back here to the beginning of the blog and before, you know that one of Anne’s biggest contribution to our work beyond the scripts is her questionnaires. They rock. She makes scripts that are connected to the questionnaires in order to get maximum big volume personalization in her classes at the start of the year. Believe it of not, she is still using them now in November, to get everyone involved in class:
“This is what I do to start every year, with the questionnaires. The classes are bigger this year, so I’m still finishing the questionnaires. One fact, one kid, and away we go. Some of the scripts (like the two I sent you) turn out to be good enough to keep, in a script form, and use another time. Others are duds as far as scripts go, but still serve the purpose of welcoming the individual student to the class and getting him recognition from the other students.”
