Reflections on the Standards – 2

Unless I am wrong, and I must be, below are the more advanced standards that we are asking students across the land who are in second or third year courses to meet. I put the verbs in red that ask, against the research, for output:

1.1.7 Ask/answer [questions].

1.1.9 Engage in [conversations].

1.1.12 Exchange detailed information.

1.2.4 Comprehend the main ideas in a variety of print media.

1.2.6 Understand main themes from audio/visual sources.

1.3.4 Produce and present etc.

1.3.5 Write short notes etc.

1.3.6 Deliver etc.

1.3.8 Write short compositions.

1.3.9 Write personal letters.

1.3.13 Present opinions.

1.3.15 Write organized compositions.

1.3.16 Prepare and deliver oral presentations.

1.3.17 Perform scenes from plays.

1.3..18 Create stories, skits and plays. (by themselves)

1.4.1 Recognize similarities and differences between writing systems.

1.4.2 Recognize similarities and differences between sound systems.

1.4.7 Demonstrate awareness of [idioms]. (How? Why is an idiom special? They either understand it or not – the author of this one probably just wanted to say “idioms”.)

1.4.8 Understand grammatical and syntactical functions exist in languages. (sic)(What about the syntax in that sentence?)

1.4.10 Recognize differences in language registers. (What does this even mean?)

1.4.13 Apply knowledge of phonetics. (This is literally impossible in the child’s first language even.)
