I was thinking about why it is so hard for WL teachers and, from what I perceive, easier for ESL teachers.
Many foreign language teachers stay with the textbook because they (unbelievably) don’t know about Krashen. They don’t know any better. Most of those who even get deep enough into Krashen reject TPRS. Why? The reason is that they are hurting and many don’t even know it.
Most were 4%er grammar kids themselves as students when they were younger and simply do not know any other way to teach. They prepared for a profession in one way and got something else.
So how can we expect them to easily change and do something differently to reach their kids? They are hurting, dazzled by what they see, by what is going on in their TPRS colleague’s classroom down the hallway, but are unable to open up to it themselves. Who can blame them? Rather, go give them a big hug every day!
It eventually is made clear to them that the larger classes that they don’t want and try so very hard to discourage are totally unreachable with grammar translation.
But then they have the double whammy of not only not grasping comprehensible input on the mental level but, a far more serious problem, they can’t deal with the kids’ meanness in their classroom. Who can? No blame!
