The Comprehension Approach to Reading

This is what Beniko Mason shared with us a few summers ago in Agen on the topic of reading. With respect, and acknowledging the crushing daily opposition to the work we are trying to do, I wonder how many of us could check off all of these seven points as something we actually do in our classrooms. I say that because these statements are research based, and I would assume that we would want to align our instruction with the research.
The students select books by themselves.
They read easy books.
They are passionate about the topic of the book.
They read many books.
They forget that they are reading in a foreign language.
They are not accountable for their work.
Often the students become autonomous readers.
