  1. Ben – I look forward to reading the rest of this idea. I really appreciate talking about the beginning of the school year now. I have some “down time” these last 2 days of school and I want to plan “in my head” for the next year. And over the summer when I am “bored” (not really) I do enjoy thinking about and creating a bit on my laptop so I’m ready for the next year.

Last year I started with your website and CI in October, so I need some help with starting the year off right!

Note: I will be on a maternity leave from early October through Christmas break and could use some thoughts about what to leave for the (hopefully German) sub for level 1. Level 2 and 3 I “think” I have covered with reading, textivate, and more.

  2. Leah have you been reading around in the Beginning the Year/Starting the Year categories? There is a kind of protocol some of use because we know that before we start anything we have to get to know our kids and set down clear rules in the first month. So this new series of articles will give you one way to start the year. If I were teaching in the fall I would definitely use it to start the year. In my opinion it is by far the strongest way to start a year, with L and D to teach verbs and CWB with a quiz happening in each class period.

We have stuff here, there was a good thread going once, on sub plans when you are on leave. I am not sure what category they are under – you may want to check in Subs/Long Term Leave. The difficult thing about level one in October is that those kids don’t read well enough, and yet you have to come up with as much input as you can so as not to waste time doing output with level one kids, which is ridiculous. I’ll post an article right now to get it going. We have the Forum as well.

  3. One thing is that if you do enough CWB from August through into October, lots of fun details will have emerged. Jenny dances on the moon on Wednesdays with (some celebrity) when it’s cold (that is the kind of thing that CWB brings). If you have enough information you could give them a big reading before you go on leave of all the stuff you have come up with in any CI you have done up to October (not just CWB) and as long as your story writer person is good and has furnished you with lots of great details, the big reading could be used for the students to make a little book (they bind it and design and make the cover – stuff some of us usually do at the end of the year as a “project” just to get through May) and illustrate it. It is something that would hold their attention for a week maybe. The point being that, although projects are useless in terms of how we know the brain acquires langauges, as per:

with the first year kids you have no options but to do projects when you are gone. You certainly don’t want a traditional sub in there forcing grammar on them because you want them to still like the class when you come back. Hopefully others add their thoughts.
