Something else I am trying to learn to expand upon and repeat more and PQA more in a story, besides a strong image, is a well built sentence, something out of the ordinary. We get such sentences, perhaps something in the subjunctive mood, and we should circle them more, because they don’t occur that often.
Recently the sentence “She is going to be able to read…” came up. My internal teaching mind seized on it with the thought that that particular structure of back to back infinitives doesn’t get much play in the overall scheme of language.
So I just started circling it, milking it for as long as I could, changing out the first infinitive with options and then the second, trying to involve the kids with personal questions using whateve verbs popped up in the discussion. Since only the verb to go was changing forms, it was easy to get a lot of reps on the double infinitive form.
