  1. Aw geez thanks guys gals and Master Ben.

But come on, I am a total rookie here. I can stir up debate but I don’t have enough exp yet to really count as experienced etc etc. I mean yest I tried that Tripp script about the costumes and man it fell FLAT. I suck FAR more often than I rock.

I’d nominate my colelague Leanda Monro, who jumkped headfirst into full TPRS this year with her French 10 (level 3) this year and is ROCKING it! At P.T.I. last week, there was a lineup to the door to see her with parents saying “for the first time, my kid LOVES French” and kids saying “can you PLEASE teach us next year?” in fear of The Grammar Grind. But Leanda’s not on here.

    So I nominate Hosler.

    1. Just open up your arms and receive this honor, Chrisz . And it will be Chrisz from now on because both you and Chris (Roberts in Ohio) are power players and write here frequently so the rest of us need to have instant recognition of which Chris is talking. You can’t just deflect the honor, since you deserve it so much. You are a very important part of this group.

The person who makes most reference to the need to honor what we do, to take time to reflect on the good things we do as we slop about in the mud of change, is another Teacher of the Month, Jeff Brickler in Cincinnati. I love the way he embraces the muck of teaching, all the insanity, the self doubt, the self rejection, while at the same time keeping a trained eye on his mental health by recognizing the true challenge of this work, which is in keeping our mental balance and loving ourselves while riding 25 foot waves on the SS Stephen Krashen in the middle of the stormy waters of the Sea of Change, surrounded by Data U Boats lurking in the waters beneath us.

Do you get what I am saying Chriz? You can’t not accept this honor. Don’t deflect this award to some teacher in Canada whom we don’t even know. It’s about you and your value to this group.

Here is something Jeff wrote here just yesterday that I personally greatly value:

Do we need approval? Yes. That is the problem. That’s why I keep talking about that this journey is so emotional and difficult. It is not just about the kids. It’s about me allowing myself to be healthy, not to seek approval, not to beat myself up. Only when we can love ourselves can we love the kids. No matter how much we work, it will never be enough. It is coming to that conclusion in a real way, not simply in an intellectual way. How often we say that we understand that we shouldn’t blame ourselves, that we shouldn’t seek approval, that we should work ourselves to death, but we continue to do it. It is one thing to understand intellectually these things and another to understand them in your heart and practice them.

  2. I feel highly encouraged to be honest about my teaching here on this blog, meaning, share my weaknesses, failings, faults, etc. I’m working on that. It’s hard because it’s totally different than the image I’ve had to convey to administration and parents and students over the years.

Who was it, Plato, or Dewey, or ?, that said , “learning comes from taking risks and making mistakes.” As demonstrated in your post above, Chrisz, you seem to exemplify this message well. The rest of us are all the better for hearing your reflections.

  3. As usual, an excellent choice! I, too, love Chris’ (or is it Chrisz) comments for their spunk and the fact that he doesn’t mince words. Expert or no, Chris, you keep us all on our toes 🙂
