Just FYI, that set of question marks in the text was “me genoito!” in Greek. It means “May it never be!”
“Does this mean that there is no place in the foreign language classroom for explicit grammar instruction?”
The inevitable question and two great reasons offered for the explicit grammar instruction. Polish and Understand the system. Both are operations performed on something already in existence. Both are human activities: Spiffy something up and Make sense of life. Individuals have different levels of drive for each of these activities vis-a-vis a given topic. What is difficult with this is knowing how long and hard we have to work to arrive at the place where there is something to make sense of.
Here is a similar answer to that question from John DeMado:
“I would humbly submit to you that many teach grammar and syntax as prerequisite knowledge for communication. I contend that this notion is misguided, at best, and leads us down the wrong path instructionally. Grammar and syntax are important, not for the creation of communication, but rather for the avoidance of miscommunication.”
