Sample Lesson Plan

For those who must still hand in lesson plans (an insult to us as professional educators), Tina offers this that can be modified for anyone’s use:

Tina Hargaden

French One
Novice Mid level of proficiency
Lesson:  Creating a story:  Boo… le fantôme
Objectives:
SWBAT comprehend spoken French used to narrate a story that the class creates together, based on a character that we created together (an anxious ghost named Boo…)
ACTFL Listening Standard:  At the Advanced Low sublevel, listeners are able to understand short conventional narrative and descriptive texts with a clear underlying structure though their comprehension may be uneven. The listener understands the main facts and some supporting details. Comprehension may often derive primarily from situational and subject-matter knowledge.
SWBAT provide one-word answers to demonstrate comprehension throughout the story creation process and in an oral quiz at the end of class.
ACTFL Speaking Standard:  Speakers at the Novice Mid sublevel communicate minimally by using a number of isolated words and memorized phrases limited by the particular context in which the language has been learned. When responding to direct questions, they may say only two or three words at a time or give an occasional stock answer. They pause frequently as they search for simple vocabulary or attempt to recycle their own and their interlocutor’s words. Novice Mid speakers may be understood with difficulty even by sympathetic interlocutors accustomed to dealing with non-natives. When called on to handle topics and perform functions associated with the Intermediate level, they frequently resort to repetition, words from their native language, or silence.
Procedure:
1.  Greet students using practiced greetings.
2.  Quickly review the calendar and check the weather in L2.
2.  Review the art of Boo…le fantôme in L2
3.  Begin the story creating process:  a class meeting inL1 to set up our jobs (Quiz Writer is new so this lively bunch should have many opinions on that!!), then a five-level story creation process that should last 25-30 minutes:  1. Class Meeting in L1, 2.  Describe Character Traits in L2, 3. Describe Location in L2, 4.  Describe Problem in L2, 5.  Go to a New Location and Solve the Problem in L2
4.  Use the quiz to provide a closure activity (oral quiz in L2)
5.  If time allows, we will also review the artists’ work in L1 (to discharge our appreciation) and then in a retell in L2.  If we have no time we will begin class next session with a review and retell, then write the story together from memory in L2.
