I have a question about storylistening. Is it okay to use L2/L1 written translations on the board during storylistening or is this not allowed in this technique?
When I was at the workshop in Erlangen last summer, Beniko wrote a couple of words in English on the board and then erased them after a short time.
Was she teaching English though? I know in one of her videos I’ve seen her write TL words. I wasn’t sure about L1 words.
She was teaching Japanese. There was a lot of Japanese on the board, and then a couple of times she wrote in English and then erased it.
I can confirm that. When I saw Beniko in San Diego, I couldn’t follow the story that well but in the system, you would start with shorter less complicated stories.
At my student-led conferences last week, it was so amazing to see the students show their learning and their growth in French class this year. They proudly talked about their reading and how they’ve progressed, and they showed some writing samples from the first day of class, half-way through the year and now. They talked about their progress and how their writing has gotten more complex. Their parents were so pleased and we all had shared moments of excitement, pride and amazement at how these kids are learning. Some of the kids didn’t even realize how much they’d learned until we did our reflections to prepare for the conferences.
The other day, I started a CALP unit with my intermediate level students. It’s on French baking and desserts. One of my students who wasn’t very interested in French at the beginning of the year and always commented on how bad he was at French was so involved in the lesson and participated non-stop. He didn’t even realize that I was speaking in French. That is an example of the unconscious mind at work!
“language, a cathedral to the human capacity for metaphor, and a monument to our destiny of becoming vehicles for God to talk”
So beautiful! May I use it?
Thank you…
