What I don’t understand here is “We did a cloze activity for a song, then listened to it.” My students do the cloze activity while they’re listening to the song, so they’re trying to find the words and if anyone dares make a peep he gets shushed by the others. Of course my blanks for the cloze activity are not the difficult words, but the ones that I’m pretty sure they can understand and hear distinctly. The difficult words I put up on the board before we begin.

    1. Yay, Judy! Most cloze activities are constructed to make students listen for things that they don’t know yet or just random words. (I once read or heard someone advocating putting a blank in every 10 words, no matter what that word was.) I play the song “Denglisch” by Die Wise Guys for my level 1 students. All of the words they are listening for are English, and many still have a hard time hearing and understanding them because of the speed of the song and the singers’ accent.
