Tina, that is AWESOME!!! which novels did you download offline?
Sounds like a great start. I wonder a few things: How often will they read?
Do you think you’ll ever read at the same time they do, or conference with them to talk about what they’re reading?
This isn’t a question, but a thought — my students read freely once or twice a week, so that means they can forget content/ what page they’re on (IF they want to continue in the same book next time). So I do have them keep a log for that purpose: 1-2 sentences about what they just read, and book & page number (or which story it was from our class stories).
I’m sure that one day I’ll sit down with them. But right now I’m going to be watching them like a hawk to see their observable reading behaviors. I’ve totally drunk the Krashen juice and don’t plan on holding them accountable for the actual contents of the reading so the idea is to look for observable readerly behaviors. And yeah! I confer with them! All these trucks I learned from being an ELA teacher and going to reading institutes at Teachers College Reading and Writing Project. I love them so much that I want to let you know they’re the finest PD I’ve ever had!

In my heritage speakers class, I have them rate their reading on a 1-10 scale.
