I love this.
“Comprehension-based teachers turn sound into meaning and WBYT is very effective in helping us do that. That’s really all we do. If someone asked us what we do for a living, it would be most accurate to say that we “turn foreign sounds into meaning so that even a beginner can understand”. We certainly wouldn’t say that we “teach” languages because that is impossible. All we can do is present understandable messages from which our students’ unconscious minds build their unique mental representations of the language. When the language is presented in this way, everyone involved in the process experiences something extraordinary – the power of the unconscious mind to learn a language without it being explicitly taught to them.”
Yes, this! The old method of language teaching is like if an art teacher just made her students memorize the name of every obscure type of art material, paint, paintbrushes, types of canvas, etc but never let them paint or draw.
great analogy, Shalay!
Love your post!!!
