Report from the Field – Greg Schwab

Those following the thread where Greg recently had to impose Grammar Rule on one of his classes, which he did with a vengeance, will enjoy this update on that class:

Hi Ben,

I thought you would enjoy this scan.   In my grammar souffleé class we are on the step where they have 1 full lecture on language acquisition.

I had them take notes.   One of my students did a ¨sketch-noting” version of taking notes.   I really enjoy this.  This is definitely going to be framed or something!

There are some things that are spelled incorrectly, but for a 15 year old being lectured on SLA, it’s pretty good.

Thanks,

Greg

  1. So I figured out a plan for what happens if I go back to stories and they revert to being jerks-

    1) Even when we go back to storytelling PARENT EMAIL remains the first step of consequence (they hate this)

    2) If a class rule is broken more than 2 times during a given class period we go back to grammar.

  2. So I am now having problems with this class again (even with a teacher’s assistant in the room). I tried a Movietalk yesterday thinking that the less free-form CI of a Movietalk would be better for this class- which can’t handle back and forth interaction, but I was wrong. I promptly stopped the Movietalk and we did translations for the rest of the period.

I have decided to go “textbook” again. But this time I will be creating packets based on stories that we did during the year.

I thought you might like to see what the packet looks like. It took me all of 5 minutes to create:

So Greg, the source material for the translation packet for the naughty group is stories from your other ‘normed’ classes, sí?

    1. Those stories are from the same class period but were created last semester. They are all stories that they have heard before because we co-created them.
