That is such a stark and excellent example, Craig. My son was assigned to pick a topic and make a slideshow in his Level 2 10th grade public HS WL class (he takes Hebrew). He chose some ancient history thing and then found some content in English and ran it through Google translate, like everyone else in the class. He couldn’t say any of the words cuz he’d never heard them. So all the kids who did exactly this got scolded the next day. The teacher, of course, didn’t discern that this output task was WAYYYYY above their level of acquisition.
So I sat with him and tried to circumlocute and strip it down to much simpler language. It was better but still ‘over his head.’ But he wanted to be done with it, and claimed, “it’s fine.” And the next day it became yet another throwaway assignment. “It went fine; she (T) was fine w/it.”
