Report from the Field – Craig West

I’ve been with these students for a week. They’re technically Spanish II. Lots of native speakers. I was starting to wonder just what to do with this class. Today instead of trying to guide them through the same thing I did with Spanish I as a “review” I decided to ask them to draw their characters. The classroom just started to crackle with this positive energy. I wish I’d done this with all my classes today.

  1. It really is all about the characters. The only caution I have is that they will want to talk about THEIR character and you have to snuff out the blurting by effective use of Classroom Rule #2. And those heritage kids will have to produce some writing on what is created, as per the Star phases.
