  1. I just now learned that the standards that I thought were in place here in my school had been scrapped last spring under the influence of Linda and Zach, our department chair. So I need not have worried. Linda told me that “we worked on them last year, during two vertical meetings. Then a sub group finished it.”
They are not based on the ACTFL standards and sub-standards discussed here earlier today. They are connected to the Three Modes. I didn’t know that a school could just base their standards docs on any part of the standards they wanted (the Three Modes is a part of the Communication standard) but they just did, certainly because Linda and Zach are the moving forces in the department here and both are full on with CI.
I will share them if anybody wants to see them, but later, if I am allowed.

  2. Ben, I don’t understand why the following can’t apply to Storytelling and PQA:
Standard 1.1: Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions.
Conversations look VERY different in the first few years of language learning, but we certainly hold them with our students, right? We do most of the talking, because students genuinely cannot do more, but students are able to express preferences, supply details, and react with emotion.

  3. I have to agree Lance and thank you very much for the clarification. I will go change that one to red. My own thinking when I read that one initially was that it implied lots of output (“engaging in conversations”) but certainly your points make the case that all conversations need not necessarily involve both sides speaking. Nice catch and thank you my brother.
