  1. Been there, done that. Each time I confronted kids w irrefutable proof in these kinds of situations they went nuts in heavy denial and it wasn’t worth it. The almost guaranteed reaction is way too much trouble.
By the way, what language were they told to write in?

  2. I believe I wouldn’t confront them but let them know that I noticed of course. Perhaps by saying their names one after the other when I hand back the homework and giving them a long knowing look and smiling at them.
I f I knew them well enough and had established a real relationship I might even go ironical and tell them I hadn’t known that they were twins bc of their identical texts.

  3. Nothing is guaranteed, but one way I encourage students to show me their true competency is to remind them repeatedly that the information they provide me helps me know what to do next, how to adapt the pace and complexity. “So if everyone turns in a paper showing understanding every single detail, that is a message for me to speed up or maybe use more complex language.” I also say “some of you will write a whole page or more, while others will write a few phrases, sentences or maybe even a list. I would expect this, since everyone is on their own individual pace.”
I say this to them each time I require anything written, such as a L1 retell, etc. I’m not claiming it’s perfect, but for the most part my students are honest with what they show me.
