See the Skill is Interpersonal Communication not Conversation which is different. Some of my most eloquent students never said a word in class. Rather, they just communicated through their eyes. We have indeed talked about this over the years and it is my earnest wish that such students, many very intelligent and savvy and tired of all the NOISE in their classes, have learned to kind of disappear, but I think that we can tell so much from their eyes. I would never say this in a public venue, bc ppl want things quantified all the time, but my view is that we can be very accurate indeed with such kids. Another thing is you would have to give quizzes, the quick quizzes, for this to work, but when a kid is consistently showing up at above an 8 on those quizzes, and looks at you and you can tell understands everything, then I have no trouble giving that kid a higher grade than the blabbermouths. I also tell them privately in the hallway why. I say, “Hey I know you’re quiet but I can tell from your quiz grades and mainly your attention in class that your are getting everything so don’t worry about the fact that you are quiet. It won’t effect your grade. You are more than pulling your weight in class. Thank you!”
At my school, some students, shy ones included, feed off of grades. So I have them complete a simple exit ticket from time to time. It can be to list 2 words and their translation for day 1 of story asking. Then for reading days, I have them write 1 original sentence. If we had a weak reading day then I keep the reading up. If we had a more involved reading day, I take the reading off the projector. If this is not your style, you can tell from the freewrites that the shy students are often the best writers. Also, in my French 2 during the crazy month of May, I have a one on one interviews. It’s just more CI for 10 minutes. The shy students are often the ones who do best. It’s more comfortable for them.
