Here is an updated version of the syllabus for the first class for those attending the new April 2nd training on the Ultimate CI Book 1. Note that the six-week training is $189.95, but is free to patrons:
Class 1 – Saturday – 04.02.22 (12:00 – 2:00 p.m. Mountain Time)
- Read the section in the Ultimate CI Book 1 (pink cover) everything about Category A – How to Create a Tableau from a Student Card.
- Read the information about Henry
- Study some of the skills and tools that are described in Part 2 and Part 3 of the book.
While reading, reflect on these questions:
- What are “questioning levels”?
- How do they fit into the StarChartTM?
- What is the primary purpose of Phase 1 of the Star?
- How many sources of images are there in Phase 1 of the Star, and how do they differ?
- Why do you think the phases of the Star are arranged as they are?
- Should it be your goal to go around the Star in each class period?
- What is the key link between Phase 1 and Phase 2?
- What would you say is our main focus in this Book 1 training?
(2) Try to find time to watch at least a few of the videos in the list below. By reading how the QLs work and by seeing them modeled over the past year by former Book 1 trained participants, you will learn how Phase 1 of the Star is structured as a template, which gives you much more control over your teaching while greatly lessening the need to plan.

(3) If you wish, you can be coached at any time on any day of the six trainings on how to go through the Cat. A process of making a tableau from a student card. Note that the teachers in the videos have set up in front of their computers simple little online “teaching spaces” for online instruction. If you are planning to get coached at some point during the six-week training, set up your own online teaching space like the ones you see in the videos.
(4) Have a piece of card stock and a marker of any kind ready at the beginning of our first class. This is how westart class on Day 1 in our classrooms or online (the UCI method is also VERY effective in online settings, unlike anything else out there). The goal is that you be in total command on the first day of school in August.
(5) Make the Star your own and don’t think of it as a “method”. There is no method. There’s just you and your students trying to uncover the widest communicative pathway between you and them, so real and actual teaching can occur. Do this by pulling from the Star the elements in it that align with and reflect how YOU like to teach, so that you can be happy when you are teaching. For example, I am happiest when using the Director’s Cues and the WCTG.
(6) Now you will no longer have to skate around on the thin ice of the internet trying to learn how to build your program, endlessly looking for “activities that work”. Collecting random activities is no way to live. You need a contiguous plan that works without even the need to plan on your part. That’s what I offer in the Ultimate
CI approach. All you do is go from one point to the next around the StarChartTM and your classes will be, to quote Pedro, “beyond your wildest dreams.”
