  1. Thanks, Ben, I am reminded that I tend to forget “with whom.” That is huge. Also, Chris Stolz is good at always creating a parallel character, and I think these two strategies are my teaching “+1” I must focus on next.

  2. And Lance on the with whom thing if you are running out of time play the “Class, a secret!” card. It works every time. Just tell them in English how to do it (they are amazingly quick) – getting their feet down thump all together with elbows crossed and a hand behind one ear leaning way forward in their seats. Then tell them, “Kate swims in a huge bathtub with Lady Gaga!” or whatever comes into your mind at that moment.

    1. I tried this the other night and it worked so well. Parents were so engaged. They were all asking if I taught adult spanish classes after the night. Thanks for the suggestion. Students came the morning after telling about how much their parents enjoyed back-to-school night.

  3. Just a word of caution about doing this with parents. I think at many schools, 10 minutes is very optimistic, and when we really take into account the filing in and out, the parents who try to talk to you at the beginning/end of class, etc. you really only have 5 or 6 minutes. In addition, setting up even a simple CI session requires us to teach yes/no, and quite a few other basic words BEFORE getting to the story. Also, if we are rushing, that might impede comprehension. I just know that this would not work in my particular situation. My plan (maybe) is to get some class activity on video, and show a 3-5 minute clip of either circling, or even better, some sort of student activity that looks like output. Even better-er, get a few volunteers to do a mini presentation or acting out of a story in the TL (especially for years 2-4). Some of these kids are on campus for parent night, and a bit of extra credit will always get them motivated.

    1. Ditto John. For my school, parents really come in and out classes as they please, and they really just want to introduce themselves. I would like to have some CI footage going on the screen which they can watch at will of different levels. Plus, I sit out the novels I use, and writing samples for them to look at.

  4. I just had Back To School Night for parents. I did the following in French in our 10 minute sessions:
    7th grade parents (new students)
1.TPR – Simon Says (touch your head, touch your nose, touch your ears) first with eyes open following my gestures, then with eyes closed
    2. Reviewed words cat, mouse, runs, arrives, looks at, screams
    3. Ran the baby mice, mama mouse, cat story with parent volunteers
    4. Did ¨Five-A-Day” video for two minutes
    8th grade parents (second year)
Same as above, excepted I used Ben’s ¨Cassie nage¨ story instead of ¨Mice, mama, cat¨ story.
All groups very happy and very participatory! A lot of smiles as I shook their hands as they left the room!

  5. Dude. See I talked theory for the part of the time I had and only had a few minutes to demo. Big mistake. Don it sounds like you started right in with the demo. Smiles all around, because those parents nights are boring for the teachers. Good job Mr. (CA) District Teacher of the Year last year!
