Hi everyone! I thought I’d write a comment so that it appears at the top of the list so that maybe you’ll see this post and then reply!
I’d love to know what others have done with this kind of set up. Or where that blog conversation is… Any thoughts?
How it going on this, Elissa? It’s for tomorrow nite, right?
Sorry we dropped the ball. Elissa needs this like now y’all. It’s something about parent’s night.
There’s the three-ring circus:

I did the 3 ring circus at my demo night…a big hit! I think I just used “plays / is playing.” Haha can’t remember back that far…September!!! But I know I had one guy playing soccer, a woman playing volleyball and another woman playing basketball. It was a big hit! Good idea to get them up doing stuff! Hmm…maybe I should do this now, in my actual classes?!
As Bryce once said this is a verb intensive method so yes by all means do that whenever. The only reason Three Ring Circus fits so much better at the beginning of the year is because we don’t have to get to stories and readings and such then. But yeah, do them. What determines what you do in this approach to teaching lies in what they actually and truly need to know. If you think that thirty reps each on three verbs is worth 15 min. of instructional time, then do that. We don’t prescribe as much as we respond to needs.
Once I had some kind of question for Diana about what to teach and she responded, “What words do you want them to know?” It’s so simple and good for the kids. Now I take an entire class to teach three structures, but I teach them for acquisition. I don’t assign a list of 100 words like “trunk of a car” to be memorized as that is stupid and even mentally cruel. Yet that is still routinely done in college language classes even today. What bozos.
