Best thing to to: Teach a workshop to your admin and guidance counselors. They will love it.
As far as curriculum goes just get Cameron Taylor’s book and use it for a cut n paste job.
What I do is this: I don’t teach units but my school requires the curriculum in units. So what I do is I don’t consider a unit chronological. For example: I do a lot of activities all year: OWI, Invisibles, Movietalk, Matava Scripts, Storylistening, Senor Wooly. So for example I will make all of these activities a “unit” and upload them to the system. Nobody calls me on it and if I explained to my admin why I do this they probably would be okay with it because I never give them ANY problems with students or parents- I manage EVERYTHING on my own.
(With few exceptions- I think I consulted the deans about 2 kids last year- I teach the lower track).
That’s how this stuff that Ben and Tina have created makes things for everyone: Ben has a system for everything from classroom jobs to contacting parents to classroom management. Other CI people follow this “just give them CI and you will be alright” BS that causes teachers to burn out and abandon CI.
Ben, can I send you my curriculum documents for posting on the PLC? Much of it has been lifted from Cameron’s book though.
Yah thanks Greg I forgot about Cameron’s book. If a teacher thinks we don’t align they should read his book and use it for planning. He also wrote a standards correlation book, besides the one you are referring to above for ANATTY, for the Big CI Book. And when he gets time he told me he’ll write one for the new Invisibles books. So odd – we create books that allow teachers to align with standards and research and they get dismissed as “out there” by teachers who are wed to the textbook. There is ZERO research supporting the use of the textbook in WL teaching. How do I know? About 20 years ago we in the Denver TPRS crowd looked for it. And Krashen and Blaine were here alot. And we asked them. If Krashen doesn’t know of any research backing up the textbook, then we can all be sure it doesn’t exist.
