Amen to all this!!!
I am not sure where the whole OPI mania started. If you look back at the history of that instrument, it was never intended for classroom use. It was for use in diplomatic areas with adults who were specifically training for overseas work. Eric Herman outlines this succinctly in his book Assessing Spanish Proficiency with Stories. I had also read that somewhere else. I am not totally sure, but I feel like this tool was developed in the 80s. I say that because I remember in my grad school program they tested it out on us. But that could be false. Maybe we had to pass at a certain level to continue the program. But I kind of remember them saying we were guinea pigs. Mid-80s, like 1986-ish??? Is that possible?
As interesting as it is to pinpoint ACTFL levels, I just do not see myself investing that $$$ in becoming a tester. I suppose it would look good on my resume, but I have other adventures I’d rather invest in. Especially since in a 9-12 program we have such a ridiculously small number of hours. What is the point? I would rather have my kids hone in on themselves and their own perception of progress and acquiring and how they can take the reins on their own learning.
Yup. Out there. Waaaaaay out there.

I might be on the right track. Check out the time line! 1982 was the provisional OPI, then 1986 they rolled out the official one. I still remember the room where I took the OPI as a grad students. I got stuck on the scenario where I would have to call a plumber. Did not know words for pipes, hardware store, etc. but I got my point across nonetheless!
