  1. This underlies everything: how can we say we are “measuring achievement” when the reality is that each child has their own set of circumstances at play in any moment. It seems really unethical to grade kids. Especially in language classes.

    I love the way Jillane Baros describes it: (paraphrasing) …if the student is present and making the effort to understand, and they still don’t get it, that is not their fault. So, if I am interpreting that correctly, she is no longer assessing “what they know.” I am looking forward to see her new rubrics and how she implements this system within a completely judgemental system.

    The work for us as the teacher is to bring this into action by creating a safe space in our classrooms This is the most difficult aspect, creating an atmosphere of trust when there is such deeply ingrained mistrust in every other aspect of the students’ lives.
