  1. This totally should be a primer. I am sure that this only a glimpse into your vision for the future of lanuage “teaching” is. Tons of quotable quotes here.

“In the new model of foreign language teaching, the first successful model, in my view, in schools in the history of education (although stories as teachers of language have been around for as long as mankind has), we see the kids involved on an emotional level.”

Amazing. This is where I need to work on. I only started to have spin-out conversations with class during my ROA. I tried it during my SURPRISE observation today. WOW!

One of my star kids was talking about paying his own ticket when he goes to the movies. I asked Qui paye? he said “Je”…. then uses structures from our PQA from WAYYY BACK telling me that he recieved a gift card for christmas to go to the movies. Very complex output flowing from the subconscious. I stopped in my tracks. Then I recasted and wrote on the board what my student said. Then we circled. Afterwards, we went right back into the reading.

….”the new comprehensible input based classrooms that are happening all over our country these days.”

Yes. I’m proud to be a part of the bunch. In fact, I’ve made a plan to become head of my Lang Dept. here at my school.

Ben, your statements about the subconscious are riveting. Your thoughts have also made their way into conversations I’ve had with my principal about limiting output in level 1 classes.

The gestures alone gave me an excellent evaluation. Oh yeah, California isn’t too radical or hippy (at least in schools), it’s just takes the latest fad in Ed and goes with it. Right now, there is a lot of training on growth mindset, social emotional climate and metacognition — how people learn.

One thing I would disagree on is the “higher-order” thinking hierarchy and how that relates to our practices in our classrooms. A fad that is still hot here in Cali is Webbs Depth of Knowledge which places “understanding” as low-level thinking. Isn’t SLA too complex to even map out this way?

It’s a big rant, I’ve just been away for awhile and getting caught up.
