Ben, now that you are striving for 90% (or more) French CI, do you now bestow only French nicknames upon students who enthusiastically accept such renaming or do you also similarly continue to bestow English nicknames. In other words, in the interest of fullest personalization, do you find that when it come to nicknaming, use of English may momentarily trump the use of French?
Rarely does a French name trump a good English name. I keep the English names. Finding and keeping a good English name, however, is harder than it may seem. It’s the end of the year again, and few names have really stuck. Still, I won’t give up on the name game next year. It’s so very powerful and warrants our best efforts. (The French names mix in with the other sounds of the French, and that, besides the personalization piece, is a euphonic reason why I keep most of the names in English – it makes the French easier to understand.)
