  1. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this PD at your school with Mark Church. It reflects the kind of Common Core, or Depth of Knowledge, or (fill in the blank), kind of whole-school or whole-district PDs so many of us go through. Getting kids to think critically and understand concepts in depth are what we are being pushed more and more to do.

This discussion relates to the previous unit/lesson planning discussion in how we teachers of comprehensible input have to live the headache of explaining what we do in terms that we don’t agree with. As a white man, I feel like I’m experiencing a taste of what W.E.B. Du Bois termed the double-consciousness faced by African Americans: an internal divisiveness created by having to negotiate between a loving community, including those here on this PLC, and an oppressive community lurking behind a cloud of smoke and the Common Core (at least, oppressive to the foreign language teaching world).

I can only hope that I can appease those oppressors poking and prodding my lesson plans with fire on long sticks with their language and their terminology enough while also, if undercover, practicing Krashen’s principles (thanks for that discussion on “principles” in the 5 Things to Throw Out of TPRS thread) so that they may see how students are making gains, are happy, are growing, and eventually how foreign language acquisition rides a different set of train-tracks than the train-tracks that the Common Core and the Danielson Framework and College Readiness Standards and even the International Baccalaureate ride. Foreign language acquisition cruises on the downhill tracks. They chug and chug on the uphill tracks.
