Leah what if you took the time this summer to outline the +/- 15 weeks you will be absent? For each week you would list some target structures, a short story, possible activities or games, entrance and exit tickets, suggestions for bail-out moves, dictée etc
It would not have to be very detailed, more as a guideline.
It may seem daunting at first, but if you base it on previous years, you may have a pretty good idea what structures you’ve taught at level 1 with home run stories and how to build/recycle the language.
Catharina,
Thanks – That’s pretty much what I’m doing now – typing guidelines.
The tough thing is, I do what I do based on hours of reading and learning here. I can’t expect someone to learn this overnight! So, I’m trying to stick to the “basics” in my guidelines. And with CI the “heart” of the teacher has to be there. So, as we know, it’s more about the how of teaching than the what. I’m hoping that it is reasonable to ask my substitute to focus on mastering circling, so that they can circle with pre-made movie talks of mine (for level 1). I am going to base levels 2 and 3 each off of an easy reader for the sake of simplicity. Hopefully, student motivation does not wane too much ; /
Other suggestions welcome!
Leah,
Not much to add here, just that I know EXACTLY what you are going through. I’m also going on ML from October, but I’m actually taking the rest of the year and I teach all levels of French. Sigh. So conflicted as to what to do as the start of my school year is Tuesday and I don’t know if I should even bother with CWB etc…since the 26th of September is my last day in class.
Good luck to you!
My last day is Oct. 10th, but I started anyways. 4 weeks or 6 weeks, for me there is no other way worth teaching that I know of. I want the kids to get the feeling that they can learn a language. Hopefully they won’t forget that!
