  1. Strong mentally and physically teachers most definitely are! It is a superheroic thing to just be a decent teacher.

I wonder if members here are being forced by their districts to create online learning programs. I’d be very curious if they are. Our Chicago Public Schools union is doing a wonderful job of protecting teachers from such mandates. For me, with three little kids at home, the idea of teaching online makes me gag. I’ll have to look at this Online Lessons post you have put up recently.

But anyways… the Invisibles. I’ve done a couple rounds of student created characters since the beginning of semester 2. A couple of big things I notice working well, and then some other notes below. 1) Not doing them every week but switching them up with Matava Scripts, specifically, or MovieTalks. 2) Capturing the most compelling details of the characters and ending the story no later than on the second day.

My classes are small. 16 students. And hardly any of them are good artists, which is fine. But hardly any of them want to be the artist anymore, I hate to say. Carla, a TCI Chicagoland member and fellow teacher in Alisa’s district, shared with me how she helps students become classroom artists. She has them practice drawing on individual white boards. So, when you have some narration written on the board, at some point, have students draw a line then reveal their drawing to their neighbor so they can guess which line it is that they are drawing. I’ve done that once already. It’s a wonderful Brain Break. And I’m going to keep doing it. It seems like a great way to help students feel more confident and playful with their art work.

    1. Good to be back everybody! I have 4 kids at home and online teaching is really just not the same as teaching in person. Plus to consider that students have all the same distractions at home but they’re all supposed to be trying to make progress in 7 classes at the same time?! Ridiculous. Anyway I’ve just asked students to do a certain number of duolingo points each week. I may put up a video or a lyrics training that’s fun but I don’t know how reasonable it is to expect very much from them at a time like this.

Craig just do enough to make your admins think you are doing your job. That’s my advice. I honestly think that any normal admin with even a somewhat clear brain will not be holding you accountable if you can’t get your students to do certain things under these circumstances. It’s absurd. Really absurd. We have enough problems right now to try to make online learning work. It’s time to get real. Many of the students don’t give a shit anyway and the only reason we have been able to “teach” them is bc they have been captives in our classrooms.
