  1. Today in our Mvskoke immersion class, we had a ball. We passed this ball around telling the folks next to each other we were giving them a ball, then we told the room that we gave them a ball. And yes there were only three sound changes an “ay” sound and an “short e” sound followed by an “s” and the inevitable “eckes”. We hammered that for a good 40 minutes just passing a ball back and forth between 9 adults and one kid. We laughed as we were asked “if the ball gave us or we gave the ball?” And it was work to listen. More work to respond outside the pattern given so it was in our own words-but not until the phrase was comfortable. We LAUGHED a lot.
This is my 3rd yearly immersion summer camp. Life in a Mvskoke house that is radically different from most homes. But, I have learned more than any year before because the info is presented in a PQA, Circling and just hammering and laughing. We eat together, play stickball, and have a cultural discussion daily.
I have to say that I would not want to have missed the rousing game of Pictionary we played with vocabulary we had learned the last three days. Competition was FIERCE. Wait until stickball tomorrow night.
What I am saying is that it was FUN. We encouraged each other. Several were new learners today and they hopped on board the train. Some went home at 2 and the rest stayed to after fireworks tonight. And the whole time we were hearing language being spoken. Yep there was English but lots of people tried to use the Mvskoke they’d gained.
As a group we are doing 2 hr. sessions at a time. And always in an atmosphere of trust.

  2. I had to share this with everyone — it is such a great analogy of CI and breathing!!!
Today, as I was “losing myself” in swimming my laps (I am just finally getting back into it since December!!! – but I have a hard time getting my “breathing” under control.) Well, before I quit last December, I had it nailed!!! I was breathing SO well and it took a while for me to get tired! I have now been swimming every day this week, slowly increasing my endurance. Today, as I was doing a lap, all of a sudden I noticed that I was not having a hard time with breathing – I felt GREAT! I had stamina and was not out of breath!!!
Then I started to concentrate on it, and think about it too hard – too freakin hard!!! and before I knew it I was GASPING for air!!!! and then it hit me……THAT is what the “monitor hypothesis” is all about!!! I stopped going ‘with the FLOW’ (literally in the pool!!! haha) and I could no longer breathe……
So, as Ben says, “Go with the FLOW” and you will BREATHE EASY!!!! 🙂
