  1. Dudley-Charlton Regional School District is about an hour from Boston, Providence, Hartford, and Springfield. It is 30 minutes south of Worcester, MA.
The workshop is part of our district-wide spring PD day. If you can make it over, it will be a support to those of us who are moving down the TPRS path as well as those who are looking for something more than grammar-based curriculum and worksheets.
Besides walking away with a fresh experience created by Laurie, it would help to strengthen the TPRS network in NE. Hoping to see you here.

    1. First, thanks go to Nathaniel for setting this up!!!! This is also a fairly inexpensive way to get to a workshop!! I won’t be able to stay long after Friday’s workshop (heading to NYC to work with Elissa!!!!), but I’m pretty sure that Nathaniel would be happy to set up a post-workshop get together (at a restaurant?! :o) ) and REALLY get things going. Possible Nathaniel? It is actually a great location for MA people but Conn. people and other states as well!
      with love,
      Laurie

      1. 1. Lorinda Allen, our new curriculum coordinator, made this so easy to do. She has been so supportive of our start-up PLC. When I proposed a TCI Best Practices PLC, Lorinda suggested we might be able to bring in a speaker. I basically got Laurie’s contact info and Lorinda and Laurie hammered out the details.
        2. Post-workshop get together. That’s a cool idea. I am open for ideas on this. Thanks.

  2. Just a reminder for anyone in or around New Jersey. Laurie Clarcq will present at FLENJ (New Jersey FL state organization) on Feb. 27 in New Brunswick about Embedded Reading. Dr. Krashen will be the keynote speaker on Saturday 2/28. Liam O’Neill teacher of Chinese, Scott Grapin and Noemi Rodriguez will each present on CI. The conference will be held at a the Hyatt Hotel across from the train station with a 45 mn commute from New York City.
Anyone from this PLC going -besides me-? Annie Ewing? Chill? Greg? Carly? I will keep notes to share with anyone interested.

    1. I’m so excited about the chances for East Coast folks to get together! We need these “boosts” whenever we can!. Catharina, I’d love to share your notes on the Embedded Reading website if you are interested! As Bryce Hedstron says, “We are all in this together.”
I’m arriving Wed afternoon and leaving Sunday am…so hoping to visit w/as many people as possible!
      with love,
      Laurie

      1. Absolutely Laurie. I will take notes of your presentation and the mini sessions I’ll attend on Saturday and forward them to you so you can post them for anyone interested.
It’s -revolutionary- yes it is, that we are having 4 TCI presenters + Dr. Krashen at the New Jersey state conference. Such a progress. Curious to see how many hands go up if Krashen asks who practices TPRS 😉

  3. Just wanted to remind you that Laurie Clarcq in Massachusetts – March 13 is exactly 28 days from today. (Dudley, MA is south of Worcester on the CT border).

      1. Thanks Ruth.
And as a reminder (that Laurie Clarcq will be presenting here in Massachusetts), March 13 is exactly 10 days from today. (Dudley, MA is south of Worcester on the CT border).

  4. My friend, Scott, requested time during today’s department meeting to discuss Laurie’s workshops on March 13.
After going through the stuff of extreme urgency but questionable importance, there was not much time left for discussion, Scott did make several pertinent remarks.
He said that in our curriculum mapping we need to start reducing the amount expected of the students.
We need to focus and spend more time on the high frequency words. The reasoning was that if a native speaker accomplishes most communication with only 500-1000 words, we should focus on a smaller amount.
We need to SLOW down so students can process what we are saying. (Implication: Reduce)
The thing that stood out to him the most was Laurie reminding us that we have to ask ourselves, What is our goal? The corollary question is, Is this helping us reach the goal? And a third question, “How do students learn?”
Four of our nine HS FL teachers did not attend the AM session, so Scott did us a service by keeping the ball rolling. Scott is not letting people off easily, just because they chose a non-FL workshop instead.
