Trisha,
First of all, big congratulations to you for your sense of entrepreneurship and your great adventure! Opening up a business is a great adventure and a lot of work, but so worth it IMO.
I’ll be curious to see how it goes, this is something I have been thinking about my self, and MB and I were talking about this again a few days ago.
I love that your doors are open to anyone regardless of income ability, and that you will offer scholarships. What a great business model. I know I couldn’t afford my kids’ school tuition if it weren’t for scholarships.
Good luck in this endeavor and do let us know how it goes. Don’t get discouraged, it supposedly takes up to two years for a new business to break even. But if you can withstand the first year, then your chances of success will increase exponentially.
Thanks for your insight, Sabrina. You make a good point about the amount of time it takes for a business to take off financially. I was glad my husband acknowledged that he didn’t expect it to happen overnight. I do expect that as one group of students and their parents see success, the next group will be a bit larger and easier to obtain.
Your words of encouragement make me realize that I will certainly be relying heavily on the kindred spirits of this group next year. One of the scariest aspects of this choice is that I don’t have someone down the hall to commiserate or celebrate with. I’ve been a quiet lurker on this site since joining it, but you, as my “cyber-colleagues,” will be probably be hearing from me a lot more next year!
Thanks for getting the word out, Ben! I am excited about the plan for next year and will keep everyone posted regarding the progress of the venture.
I put the two essential pieces of information on the website: a definition of TPRS and our main construction material of CI. I think that when parents see the alternative that we have to the traditional model that they knew as students, they will become just as excited as we are about teaching with CI.
I have more that I would like to discuss in the way I plan to approach CI with my students this fall, and I will talk about it in another post. I’ll keep you all in the loop as I “blog within the blog” on my experiences through setting up this summer and working with students in my bonus room over the garage. The idea of self-employment is scary but exhilarating!
I am curious, Trisha. How do you offer classes during the school day? Did you make a special arrangement with the school?
This is inspiring, Trisha. I will be following your success with interest.
This is wonderful!! Best of luck in your venture! An entirely new group of students is about to experience the love and success of your teaching!
with love,
Laurie
Jody–
I will be offering classes to homeschoolers and non-traditional students (those who are doing computer-based classes, etc.). That’s why my classes are scheduled in the morning and early afternoon.
Thanks for your interest and questions. I’m sailing in uncharted territory, and I appreciate other people looking at the situation with me!
As schools continue to collapse, you will have more and more students.
