Coming back from bogus pl, I find these words to ring truer to life than listening as to how our heritage speakers can be familiar with AP tasks.
“never let him be snubbed and scolded” This should be a mantra.
Interesting you should point out that line, Judy. It is my mantra certainly and in the marrow of all my work. Certain people chide me about my extreme position on assessment, but if we are to truly not snub or scold, then we would get off our high horses about summative testing and move to loving formative feedback to the kids where we tell them in words what we are seeing from them in class and that is all.
If our bosses don’t believe in our capacities in that area, and they require us to in fact come up with hard data, then they are expressing their lack of faith in us. (Some of us will begin this “revolt” on behalf of children against the established order.) I have heard for far too many years too many important people tell me that teachers need feedback from kids. Good, Get that feedback. But it can’t be found at the end of a pencil. It can only be found in their eyes.
Today I sat with three readers who yesterday I noted very confused and off task behavior. And then today they had the hang of it! Reading happily side by side. I told them what I noticed yesterday and what they were now doing. They were very very pleased to be told in words what they were doing better. Smiles and firstbumps ensued. I felt so happy. Like I nudged them down the path!!
