Does anyone know of any TCI friendly schools that are hiring for Spanish on the south shore of Boston? One of our new “Maine groupies” is looking. Thanks!
And for anyone in Chicago, there are 3 Spanish positions available at my school, Clemente H.S. Many of the classes for these positions are Heritage Speaking classes, which can be a nice complement to regular Spanish classes. Reality check: There have been over a dozen Spanish teachers that have quit or been let go over the past couple of years, and from what I gather, they were all textbook teachers. Come help me turn these Spanish classes into something meaningful for the kiddos! Admin is open to T/CI, but it’s a matter of classroom management more than anything to get admin fully on board.
… and know that I’ll promise to be your BFF throughout the school day from beginning to end!
I support Sean’s plea for reinforcements. We are a democracy and we all need to dedicate at least a part of our career to urban schools. This is not a joke. Sean is one of my great heroes in this work. It is not for the faint-hearted. But once trust is built, lives change. Of my 37 years in the profession, I have spent 19 in urban environments, with 13 being in rough urban environments. Those were the best years. I never thought I would say that. So why do we never talk about this here, by they way? Is this not an important topic to get out in the open? Or do those kids get grammar teachers who quit on them – is that how it works? You rock the house, Sean. Although looking back, I wonder how I personally was able to teach some of the classes I did. I think I’ll apply for canonization in the church for those years spent learning that there is something in teaching far more valuable than high test scores – building love and trust with kids many of whom have experienced neither in their young lives. Can anyone say Laurie Clarcq?
Building love and trust, thankfully, is also what my admin is really all about as well. It took me a couple of months working at the school to realize this. So, I do think it could be a great hub for T/CI, if I could get a compadre across the hall. Jorge Perez DeJesus, who presented at NTPRS last summer, is a graduate of Clemente H.S. (the school I teach at). He expressed interest in coming back to Clemente upon his return from a military service in June 2016. (I’m going ahead and putting him out there like this. But I consider you guys family… our intentions are good.) I’m crossing my fingers for his safe return to the States as well as for joyous return to his old neighborhood school.
If Jorge does return, it will begin something. I just know it.
