And I know that there are a lot of generalities in that post above and that we need specifics. We have a ton of specifics in the posts under Classroom Discipline, but that’s a lot of reading in search of the gems.
I would like to see concrete suggestions in one list. Maybe I’ll start a list right here and see if anyone adds any concrete, really effective management responses to the wingnuts that we seem to find in quantities of one or two in each of our classes. Here is one from last year that really worked for me:
We get members of our department who want to swap out kids who are having a bad day in our classes. At any moment I can bring a kid from my room into Nestor Bravo’s Spanish classes across the hall. Nestor gives us a big smile, his class looks at my kid, Nestor offers a table in the back of the room for the kid, the kid sits down at the table with a French book and instructions to do some chapter work, and it is wonderful. I reciprocate the favor whenever Nestor needs it. We’ll be doing that all year when it’s needed.
