  1. I have never done any of this distance type stuff but would be happy to help / try it out. My heart aches for this kid and I find it so disappointing that a school is shackling him kid to “standards” or whatever with no regard to his individual talents and needs. Especially a Catholic school which I would assume might want to follow in the steps of a certain Person of Great Humility and Compassion. Sigh. Yes. Judging. Sorry. I am only human. WWJD?
I wonder if he can still “pass” according to their standards, though. That is my only hesitation. Does the “alternative” need to ensure he still somehow memorize all 75 structures per chapter?
Keep me in mind if someone else with more tech / distance experience does not emerge. I could also contact a former student who is in Austin to see if she is available for one on one live tutoring. She is an absolute LOVE. I don’t know if this is feasible, but definitely worth asking the question. Who knows, she may know someone else more local…Houston. I also have a cousin who lives in Houston. I will email her to check it out. I feel like the best way to support this boy is to find a live person if at all possible.

  2. Nancy Meredith is in Austin – maybe she knows someone in Houston – yes, I agree with you Jen! This poor kid needs a live person to show him LOVE while he is acquiring.

  3. Nothing beats having a live person. That person doesn’t need to have many teaching skills -though TPRS familiarity would be golden – but does need to be super patient. I bet you can find a French tutor… check postings at your local college. If you hire a tutor without much experience, encourage them to try to stay in French and keep the vocabulary high frequency and very, very, very limited.
Yet, I can only imagine that Terry Waltz has perfected her teaching via Skype.

  4. There is a German teacher I have seen present who sort of does something recording himself online and then having the students reply to his questions by recording themselves and uploading it to his page, for him to check. It’s kind of like circling questions, that he asks them. It sounds like the technique might work for him.
But, what about duolingo, mango, memrise, live mocha. Some of these are like rosetta stone, but if he hasn’t figured out how to memorize effectively, he can certainly write down notes and help himself that way, right?
I’ll email someone and try to get the name and website of the teacher I’m thinking of.
