Half CI/Half Grammar – 6

How does the “Half CI/Half Grammar” plan work through four years? That’s the beauty of the Deuxieme Livre – it covers four years of grammar from “er” verbs through the pluperfect subjunctive.

It’s the worst-named workbook in the history of workbooks but is the best workbook ever designed – the best designed exposition of French grammar I’ve ever seen because it simplifies everything so well.

I’m not even sure if this plan of half CI and half grammar would even work if you didn’t have this book, because then you would be teaching grammar out of a mess of too many other books and all the extraneous bullshit that would only confuse everybody – you know what I mean if you are a teacher.

So, my suggestion is:

Years 1 and 2:

1/2 CI and 1/2 Grammar

This could be done by splitting individual classes in half, or by splitting your two options every other day, or weekly, even monthly, as you choose.

Years 3 and 4:

1/3 CI and 1/3 Grammar and 1/3 Story Listening

There are posts here about Story Listening:

It’s time for us to stop suffering by trying to make the research work in our schools. It’s time to wave the white flag, unless we work in a building with enlightened colleages and administrators. Our nation’s schools, all the schools in the world, in fact, aren’t designed to support the research. Someday they will be, but not now.

If you were to make this change by powering down the CI engines a bit, it would mean you wouldn’t have to stress yourself out so much trying to be a CI hero. We already have too many of those.

Let the change happen naturally at its own proper speed. Stop spending so much time and money trying to retrain yourself in CI. Take it easy on yourself. You can do it because you’ll be doing so much less CI. It’ll all be easier.
