1 thought on “Grits”

  1. …acquisition is like grits. It comes free with every engaging lesson we serve up…..
If we forget this, we forget everything. The fact is that we must get the kids focused on the meaning and then they will unconsciously acquire (basic Krashen). So, when we focus on the three structures as per the “Rebar” series of posts here, we still miss the point. We ourselves should of course use the three structures over and over and over in every single sentence we say when building a story, but, unless we ourselves have our own minds focused on the meaning of what is going on in the story, getting huge amounts of reps but not focusing on the structures, we won’t be able to convince the kids that the story is real. The same is true for PQA. That is why I prefer emotionally charged stories comprehensible input – they are so much easier to throw ourselves into. If this believability, this “vraisemblance” is good enough for Molière, then it’s good enough for us.
