Thanks for sharing this Doug, made me reminisce about the past ( I had a 2 year relationship with a Japanese man before I met my husband) .
I can tell you from having gone to Japan twice and experienced that culture from close that this is not typical. Japanese people in general are very private and DO NOT display their emotions in public. They are very reserved people .
The cult of individualism is what typifies our Western culture, and they idealize community life.
But what a beautiful atypical story though. These kids for sure won’t need therapy because they have learned early on how to use their words ( through their writing/ oral narratives and drawings) to channel their emotions.
This year for the first time (I learned this from Blaine and I know Karen Rowan does it too b/c she s shared some of her kid’ s stories) I have asked my students to tell me what s going on in their lives IF they feel like sharing , typically at the end of a quiz (I have only done it twice but plan to continue).
This has been eye- awakening for me, and has brought many tears to my eyes b/c some of the stories I have read have been just too hard to bear. More importantly it has made me more compassionate and less judgmental towards all of my kids b/c you never know what is happening at home or in their lives in general.
But Doug may be I m telling you something you already know . Are you teaching in Japan? Or do you teach Japanese?
video wa ee ee desu ( that means the video is good in Japanese). Haha I still remember some japanese, having a foreign boyfriend is the best way to learn a foreign language!
Thank you Doug
Oh , and I forgot to mention: Blaine used to give an extra point on the quiz for those who decided to answer .
This was wonderful. I’m going to use it with some of my adult students. A lesson for all of us.
