  1. When you say “German books” I take it you are not talking about textbooks, right?
In addition to “Sabine und Michael”, Michael Miller has readers called “Hilde und Gunter”. I wasn’t able to buy a class set so haven’t used them as part of my teaching. However, during FVR my current level three class has devoured them. Last year they all read the level 1 reader; this year they read the level 2 reader. No one asked for help with vocabulary, and they obviously enjoyed them.
Gerhard Maroscher is publishing German Readers. I haven’t used these, but others speak highly of them. Gerhard’s website is germanreaders.com/.
Sabine Lewis from OK State U has two readers: “Geld oder Liebe” and “Haende weg von meinem Kopf”. I haven’t read these either, but others recommend them. I don’t know where to get them, but you can contact Sabine at slewosu@okstate.edu
Rob Williams has a set of TPRS short stories available through Teacher’s Discovery: “Thematic Short Stories about Me”; “TSS all around Me”; “TSS about Everything”; “TSS about Everything Else”.
James Davidheiser has written “Deutsch durch Maerchen” (German through Fairy Tales). You can get it (as well as some of Michael Miller’s and Gerhard Maroscher’s books) from TPRS Publishing. http://www.tprstorytelling.com/

  2. This is a follow-up on the multi-level class. I used to teach a level 3-4-AP combination. My French colleague apparently runs a split class under the same conditions, dividing her time between the level 3 students and the 4/AP students. I would go bonkers. Instead, I had a two-year curriculum. One year we did the “A” portion, the next year we did the “B” portion. It didn’t matter whether a student entered in the A or B year; students would pick up what they were ready for. That would be my suggestion for a level 1/2 combination. Of course, the needs of an absolute beginner will make the start of the year a bit rough, especially since part of that will include instruction in “Playing the Game” – but students who have already bought in can help set the tone and model the process.
