Hi Tami,
I teach the fifth-grade exploratory course in my school, and I have a few favorite things to do that use the students as the “materials”.
One is to have them make placards that illustrate one favorite activity, and to circle with who does what (where, with whom, how well, etc.)
Another is to use” has, doesn’t have, and asks for” with some random object, or something chosen by the kids. One student has it, one wants it and asks for it. The answer is up to the kid that has it (they love this part.)

Have you looked at the German Blaine Ray stories? “Look who’s talking” The first one starts off with lots of cats and other animals. I think it would work for Grades 4 and 5.
