First Day of School Possible Plan

This is from Elena Overvold in Portland:

Hi Ben,

Tina created this schedule for the first few days of class for people on a block schedule (90 min. periods). I’m planning to give this a whirl next week when the students come back.

Days 1 & 2:

1.Students make name cards on card stock–> Include picture of favorite activity; pet; sport, etc (10-15 min.)

2.Circling with balls; 3-4 students (15-20 min. or longer if students are interested)

3.TPR/Brain break (7-8 min.)

4.Super Mini Story using super simple dialogue and TPR (20 min.)

–target structures like “looks at”  “says to her/him”

–audition actors

–example of a simple story:

The girl looks at the boy. The boy walks to the girl (director’s cue). The boy looks at the girl (director’s cues). The girl looks at the boy (directors cues)

The boy says, “Hello!” (insert directors cues).

The girl says, “Hello!” (insert directors cues).

5.Write up the story as a class following Reading Strategies 1-3 from TPRS–The Easy Way(25 min.)

—teacher writes up story in L2 using doc cam; students fill in the blanks with names, proper nouns, etc.

—teacher reads in L2

—choose from the menu of reading options 3-21 as time permits

6. Quick quiz (5 min.)
