  1. …I was able to confront a resistant student without fear, without hesitation, and without anger…

That’s pretty much it. Now, for me this year, it’s about using my Three and Done deal to get the kid worked with outside of the classroom. I don’t have the courage to do that dance (…the class was thrilled by this show…) in front of the other kids. Too much of a chance of losing or getting in a stalemate like that, for me bc I tend to want to win. But yeah, great work dude! Keep reporting in on our man Ethan.

  2. So encouraging to hear John. Today I had a student in Latin 2 blurt out a grossly inappropriate comment for attention. I took your example and asked him immediately to step outside with the timer. He was fine the rest of the period, and there was no confrontation, no anger, etc. just like you described. In the past I probably would have tried to just “move on” from the comment or ignore it or something. This was so much better – a clear and direct action that communicated what was appropriate and still respected the student. Thanks! David

  3. Wow! These stories are powerful and encouraging. Thank you John for telling the story with all the details. I am only in my first week and am mixing up some CWB, OWI, PQA and rules chat. So far I’ve only had to point at the rule, but now I am going to arm myself with an egg timer!

Since today is Friday, I am going to give the first self-evaluation. In the spirit of action and reflection, I want the students to become aware of how they are interacting (or not). Since we are at the very beginning of the year I hope that this will give them the best chance possible to develop a pattern of wise choices.

The whole series of “starting the year” discussions here has a really vital energy that is keeping me honest with how I’m proceeding. It really feels like we all have each others’ backs. It’s incredibly empowering and it is holding me accountable. I am typically pretty spineless, but I feel confident about my nascent spine of steel (ha!) because of this group. Actually I would rather envision a spine of birch. I really love birch trees 🙂

As a very lone wolf in my school, I truly feel the tribe membership, so that keeps me afloat in those moments of exasperation. I’ve noticed that I’m not as bothered by things that would normally cause me to attach to my bitchy edge and put me in a spin! Already I have done things that I’d never pictured myself doing, such as sending home the syllabus / rules / rigor poster and rubric to the parents and having them sign. It opened a dialogue with one parent already.

Anyway, I’m really feeling some deep solidarity. Thanks all!

  4. Go, John! Not only have you made a very clear statement about how class will run, you have given “Ethan” a look at a new way to gain attention that could be a turning point for him. I am so glad to have found a group where this is how we interact with children.
