I’ve been thinking about my own weekly schedule. Depending on the structures, I find it hard to PQA for an entire period, but with some structures I could go two days. I find it especially hard to do a reading for two days. So I’ve been bouncing this idea around in my head: story sequels (or even prequels). If this is something I decide to try the week may look something like this:
Monday – do some PQA then story
Tuesday – do a reading based on Monday’s story
Wednesday – Using the same structures (maybe add a structure, an easy one, for more fun) do either a sequel or a prequel to Monday’s story. Whether it’s a sequel or prequel just depends on what I feel like.
Thursday – do a reading based on Wednesday’s sequel or prequel story
Friday – P.A.T. or novel
Chris, I hear you about the reading for two days – I try to follow Ben’s weekly plan but the second day of reading is a real stretch for me. However, contrary to what you describe, I sometimes have to stop myself from PQA to make sure that we get to a story that can be turned into a good reading. I really have to work on my reading stratgies, though – hopefully (actually, I’m sure of it) Laurie’s workshop in Saratoga Springs in a couple of weeks will help me do just that. I’m so excited, Laurie, I can’t wait!!!
You are in for a treat and please share bc we all need to know more about reading strategies. What Laurie and Michele have done is brought us genuine strategies as opposed to the Read and Discuss technique we got from Blaine in about 2006. R and D was/is good, but there is too much emphasis on the D part, with all the spinouts that we learned from Jason. Spinning out discussion from a text is great, but what we need to know now is how do we spend two quality days, at least, on reading the same text that was created from the story on Monday/Tuesday*. You will definitely get that from Laurie and I am making a very strong request here that you share what you learned with us after that Saratoga workshop. We’re all very busy right now, but we have to keep this training focus going as well, in spite of how busy we are.
*when I first attempted trying to plan entire integrated weeks based on three structures for one story, it seemed undoable, but now it has matured into a very workable plan. It is very organic to work from three structures and turn them, after PQA, into a story and then into a reading over the week. I will publish a new Weekly Schedule – 2011 to replace the 2011 one soon. It will reflect the Friday changes I have made. These are not the only way to plan a week – we all do our own thing ultimately bc our work should reflect our own personalities. So here are a few related links to the above discussion for anyone who may have joined our group recently:

Believe me, I will be so focused in Laurie’s workshop that it will justfiy a 5 on jGR! And I will absolutely fill you all in on everything that Laurie will impart on us. It’s a pre-conference workshop during the NYSAFLT conference at the beginning of October.
I’m devoting this weekend to all the “finishing” touches! Can’t wait to see you Brigitte!!
with love,
Laurie
Laurie, you have no idea how many people are going just to see/hear you!!!!
Well there are nineteen registered for my workshop. :o) That is enough for me! We’ll have a great time!
with love,
Laurie
Sounds perfect – so we’ll get a lot of your very minimally divided attention, we’re so lucky!
