I can see the importance of choosing the best two possible artists for these positions.
All of the student jobs that you use are amazing, however, in the book A Natural Approach to the Year, there are so many jobs descriptions. It would helpful to us as teachers if you could provide an abridged version, a list with their descriptions in a downloadable/printable format of the most important/essential jobs so I can read them off to my students. They really want to know what the jobs entail before they try out the job.
I’m not against making such a list, but Diane it is best that you don’t set the jobs out like buffet food. Rather, keep them hidden and SLOWLY over the first months keep quietly evaluating each student and YOU do pairing up with the jobs.
So, if you know all the jobs as laid out in Supplement 8 of the Invisibles Supplements book, and you have decided that Sally would be the perfect Profe 2 for the class, once you have made that decision and she walks into class you tell her what the job entails and offer it to her. You tell her that you have specially picked her for the job. She usually accepts.
Otherwise, when THEY get to pick, I guarantee you that only the forceful kids who are used to having their way in class will get the good jobs and guess what? They won’t be qualified. I designed this system for quiet kids as well. I’m so tired of certain kids running the class and when they see their quiet peers running class it makes them reflect on that peculiar aspect in our culture that the loudest get to win. Thus you must wait and offer when it is time.
Of the 17 jobs, in a typical class it takes me all year to assign those jobs to the RIGHT student. And if by March or April I only have six jobs assigned, because that’s all I got to, then so be it. When they get to pick, it always ends up that you wish you never would have given them the choice.
So, keep the jobs a secret until you really need them filled. And the only ones you really need to fill are the artists, story writer, quiz writer, videographer, profe 2, and that’s it!
I agree that the list of jobs in ANATTY is too much. But the 17 in the new books are perfect.
And you won’t always get a tech hub (D). That is just fine. Do what you can and if you have the six jobs listed above as a minimum, the class still works swimmingly.
