Discipline Question 1

In the past fifteen minutes I have received two direct questions about problem kids. Here is the first one:

Ben,

I go back on Tuesday. My plan is to start the year with your Circling with Balls, or at least some form of it. I have a quick question regarding the Archie videos and targeting the Archies in my classroom to get them to submit. It’s my fourth year. The obvious troubled kids are obvious to even the dullest crayon in the box but what about those undercover troubled kids? Maybe I’ve just been naive these last 3 years but there are times when I don’t realize a kid was an Archie until it was too late and my dreams were crushed.

I’d like the PLC to help me with a list of warning signs for when a kid is an Archie. Maybe some veteran teachers have noticed signals that are consistent but may be very subtle. I’d love to keep it in my back pocket for the first days. Could you open up my question to the PLC?
