From Robert Harrell:
Hey Ben:
Recently I came across a term that was new to me, Dialogic Reading, so I did a bit of research on it and have typed up a summary of what I discovered. As you can see, it is very similar to things that we have developed for foreign language learners. However, now we have a nice academic-sounding word for it and research to back up its efficacy.
Robert
What is Dialogic Reading?
Dialogic Reading is a technique pioneered by Dr. Russ Whitehurst, based on what many parents do naturally with their children, that helps emergent readers develop strong comprehension skills. In addition, it has a positive effect on oral language skills. Dialogic Reading involves discourse [dialogue] that takes place about the story and images. (dialogic-reading) It is basically a conversation between a child and a parent/caregiver/teacher about a text.
Dialogic reading “involves questioning and prompting children during reading to foster extended conversations about text.” (Silverman, p. 202)
Results of doing Dialogic Reading
“Dialogic Reading Techniques have been shown to be very effective in helping children to improve language skills that better prepare them for reading on their own” (book-‘em)
Emergent readers are able to develop strong comprehension skills as well as oral language skills. (dialogic-reading)
The Quantity and Quality of interaction develop good reading and interpersonal skills and a good attitude toward reading. (book-‘em)
