  1. For anyone planning on using this fun script, one way you can tie in media is by playing the tree cutting clip from the National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and to have students write down words they would use if they were dubbing the film into Spanish. I’m doing this as a warm-up for the second day.

  2. I am doing “Cutting Down a Christmas Tree” with my French 1 & 2 classes. Any suggestions on how to get PQA reps on “nothing happens”? I struggled with today with my first year 7th graders.

    1. LOL. Don that is one of the few decent scripts I ever wrote and Anne let me put it in her book. I will publish it as an article along with “Going to the Mall to See Santa”.

On the “nothing happens” thing I would just have the actors freeze at that point at the end of the first two locations. At the end of the first location, the girl hits the tree 54 times with a little ax (the variable), or whatever your class suggests in its place, so they just have to stand there in silence for as long as you can get them to, and the class has to be silent. When one of the actors or students breaks because of immaturity on stage, to correct them, you just yell out, “Nothing happens!” It’s a good chance to get more reps on that target, and with strong emotion on it, and it helps them learn to more accept and embrace silence in a group.
