  1. Don’t get me started on this!!!

Rahm ‘s idea of fixing Education in Chicago is to either close schools or open charter schools where unions can’t form therefore annihilating any chance for democracy to be practiced.

Oops, I forgot his latest idea: to turn schools like mine into IB schools. And squeezing teachers, forcing them under contract to attend unpaid training in the summer and the rest of the year or be let go. Did you say autocracy?

Why does he want to turn schools into IB model? Because he things that giving them a different label is going to change things. Same thing happens in the corporate world by the way, it’s really an old idea that keeps on creeping back…

So let’s add more tests to this assessment-driven education model, that’ll solve things.

And teachers, be creative and hard-working and dedicated and align with the core standards, but DO NOT teach to the test.

Isn’t he forgetting the essential: that the same kids are going to show up at our door next year, with the same issues of poverty and neglect and abuse and racism and discrimination and the list goes on and on.

Ask me where Rahm’s kids go to school?

The same School where Obama’s girls went to school while he was living here ( BTW, I really like Obama) : Chicago lab School, which is part of University of Chicago, one of the ten top universities in the world. Is he a hypocrite?

IDK, may be, may be not. Heck, my kids go to a private school too, and I spend 3/4th of my salary paying for that. I cannot let my little Zac who has special needs sit with 39 other kids in a classroom. He can barely manage with 18 as it is.

This is a big mess I’m telling you.

  2. Sabrina, the passion behind your words is so telling. You obviously care so much what happens to the kids. This would be a great editorial for a wider audience.

    1. Tamula,

      Thank you for noticing.
I m indeed very passionate and always have been, it’s in my DNA. I think passion can be a good driving force but I think too much of it can be destructive, and finding a right balance is very painful and difficult.
Right now I feel it’s more destructive than constructive so I am working on that, personally and professionally.

  3. You know those horror movies where the alien invaders sometimes show their tails? And that’s how the audience knows they are aliens? But they mostly look normal? Welcome to the world of education. Chicago is just the first city to be doing this. We’re in a movie, y’all, and it’s not a comedy.

  4. There is so much to complain about in the French school system, perhaps in any system, because it is made of imperfect human beings, yet I am grateful that I spent most of my career here where basically I was allowed to do what I thought was best practice and I was well paid for it.
